Season Finale to be May 29th!

Mermaid's Market (with Pirates!) in May
by Naomi Black

Can you believe we are nearing the end of the 9th season of the Mermaid's Market?
I thought I might briefly review the history of the market and tell you what the "mermaids" have planned in the very near future!

Way back in the winter of 2011 and spring of 2012, we participated as vendors at a Farmer's Market here in Peñasco. Yet, as the fall of 2012 approached, we realized the Farmer's Market would not be returning. Russ and I began thinking about organizing a similar event. In discussing some of the obstacles that existed for the Farmer's Market, we decided that we had a very real lack of "farmers!"  The prior market had definitely attracted more artisans, artists and crafters than farmers

So, we decided to call it this new project the Mermaid's Market. It sounded a little more artsy. Besides, who knows exactly what mermaids sell - or buy for that matter! (Although, it seems as tho they must buy & sell wonderful treasures!)

We also wanted a highly visible spot. The "Shrimp Plaza" or Park was our first choice! We were absolutely thrilled to receive permission to have the park as a home for the Mermaid's Market. Through these past 9 seasons, we have worked with several administrations to renew these permits. The Mermaid's Market also benefits our local DIF organization, which gives assistance to local vulnerable families and children.

At the end of our 2nd season (April of 2014), we introduced a season finale: the Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza. It would be a "Cajun-style New Orleans Party". This was the first time that we had food and beverages at the market. The following year, we added live music and entertainment!

In April of 2018, we began sharing the park with the Oaxaca Market each spring around the Semana Santa season and that year there was no finale party. In 2019 our finale was relocated to the far side of the park. And of course, in April of 2020 there were no group gatherings scheduled at all.

For 2021, we have redesigned our schedule and, after a brief interruption, we are happy to announce our Pirate and Mermaid Fiesta will happen! This Mermaid's Market season finale will be on Saturday, May 29th.

Our artists are definitely excited to return to the park! We will have food and drink along with live music and entertainment all day. In the spirit of New Orleans fun, the bar will be serving up Hurricanes in addition to our signature Mermaid Margaritas! There will be a few strains of Zydeco music thrown in, too.

Are you willing to join the fun? Dress up as a Pirate or Mermaid and we will have prizes for great costumes!  We hope to see you there.

2020 - 2021 Season

We are calling this 2020-2021 Season the "Masked Mermaid" Edition
of the Mermaid's Market. We are all anxious to get back to the park!

However, we are also working closely with the local officials
to be sure that our market will open with all Required Protocols in place.

All vendors and attendees will be required to adhere to these protocols.

MERMAID'S MARKET Summer 2020

Everyone involved with the Mermaid's Market was disappointed
when we had to cancel our last two events of the season
due to health concerns regarding the Covid19.
Those events would have been on March 21st and finally our huge
season finale, the Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza on April 4th.

For many of us, this city-wide lockdown also meant
closing our storefront shops.
Others, who normally walk the beach as vendors,
were barred from all the beaches.
Much of Spring break and then the Semana Santa holiday
were closed to all visitors.
As small business owners and artists, many of us
traditionally have depended on these springtime events
for a large portion of our income!

We are therefore putting together
a Virtual Mermaid's Market - over the course of the summer -
which we hope is a way for you to
stay connected - or re-connect - with the individual
artists and vendors from the Mermaid's Market.

APRIL 1 ST 2017

It’s that time of year!

It’s that time of year! April 1st is the date for this year’s Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza, bringing the tastes of a New Orleans Cajun party to Peñasco - with pirates and mermaids galore!

The Mermaid’s Market is in its 5th year and has become known as a local marketplace to find unique and eclectic ‘mermaid treasures’. . . gifts, clothing, candy, home decor, paintings, photographs and more.  This year the ‘Mermaids’ have introduced the Mermaid’s Lounge which is our answer to a beer garden, making Saturdays at the park an even more eclectic, one-of-kind shopping experience. Each 1st and 3rd Saturday (during the months of October through April) you can find ‘mermaids’ selling their wares at the Shrimp Park in the center of Rocky Point.

As part of its spring events, the Mermaid’s Market will present the 4th Annual Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza on Saturday, April 1st.  First on the schedule will be a Pirate and Mermaid dance presentation by the Elegante School of Dance.

Of course, there will be zydeco music playing throughout the day. And, at noon Richard Scott and the Puerto Peñasco Marching Band will bring in the sounds of New Orleans! In the afternoon, Los Ponchos - a fantastic local band – will introduce a music set customized just for the Party!

Want to get started dancing early? Friday night is the Southern Drawl Band coming in from Tennessee for a night of great music - hosted by the Satisfied Frog Restaurant. "Locals" tickets are available for just $15. (contact: mexicoruss@gmail.com )
Of course, on Saturday you will want to dress in costume as we have cash and other prizes for the best Pirate and Mermaid costumes in both adult and children categories! This year, first place for the adult winners will be 1200 pesos each and for the children’s contest, 600 pesos each.

Another highlight will be delicious Tastes of Louisiana from the Satisfied Frog Restaurant served all day at the park! These Pirate and Mermaid cooks will be dishing up their gumbo along with a Rocky Point Shrimp Boil with corn, new potatoes and shrimp, all boiled up with garlic. And, we have a new addition to the menu with one of our artisan cooks bringing us delicious crab bisque!

There will be 20 vendors with their Mermaid's "treasures" along with our themed drinks at the Mermaid's Lounge: Blue Mermaid Margaritas and New Orleans Hurricanes.

It promises to be a great day. Don't miss it!

2016 "Party like a Pirate!"

2016 Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza

Mudbugs, shrimp, crawfish, jambalaya, etouffee, andouille and gumbo, cajun, creole and zydeco, French Quarter, Big Easy, pralines and beignets. . .

Words that evoke a sense of New Orleans. A city that entices many a traveler, yet sits over 1600 miles away from here!

On April 2nd, the Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza bring the tastes of a New Orleans Cajun party to Peñasco with pirates and mermaids galore.

The Mermaid’s Market is in its 4th year and has become known as a local marketplace to find unique and eclectic ‘mermaid treasures’. . . gifts, clothing, candy, home decor, paintings, photographs and more.  Each 1st and 3rd Saturday (during the months of October through April) you can find ‘mermaids’ selling their wares at the Shrimp Park in the center of Rocky Point.

As part of its spring events, the Mermaid’s Market will present the 3rd Annual Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza with fantastic food and drink, arts and crafts along with great music. This has become a popular event! This year, it is scheduled early in April with the hope that even more of our winter visitor friends will still be in town to enjoy the party!

Back by popular demand is the phenomenal music of San Diego’s favorite zydeco band, Bayou Brothers. Playing both Cajun and Zydeco, the Bayou Brothers’ sound is straight out of Louisiana's bayou festivals and backyard crawfish boils! Their endless enthusiasm always promises to deliver a rousing, rollicking, foot stompin' musical gumbo you will not soon forget! Their performances will be a highlight of the Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza (presented by Penasco Recreation).

Get your first taste early in the day as the band plays a set at the park. Then join us for a fantastic evening presentation at Banditos! The evening show will begin early at 6 pm. Tickets are $10 and are available at both Mermaid’s Markets in March. Winners of the San Diego Blues Festival, you will not want to miss the Bayou Brothers. You just cannot keep your feet still when you hear their music!

Another highlight will be the delicious Tastes of Louisiana from the Satisfied Frog Restaurant served up all day at the park! These Pirate and Mermaid cooks will be dishing up seafood and chicken and sausage gumbo, featuring their own hand-crafted Cajun andouille sausage served in a bowl with rice and garnished with chopped green onions.
Always a huge draw, they will also have a Rocky Point Shrimp Boil with corn, new potatoes and whole heads of shrimp, boiled with garlic. With Crazy Ed's Original Chili Beer Hot sauce and Louisiana Hot Sauce on hand to kick things up a few notches for those who like it hot.

So . . . The Pirate and Mermaid Extravaganza – A New Orleans Cajun Party. Now, doesn’t it just sound like fun? Besides the Mermaid's "treasures" that you normally find at the Mermaid's Market, we will have additional vendors on-site along with a Beer Garden for Fun drinks (Blue Mermaid Margaritas or New Orleans style Hurricanes).

We will have our returning Mermaid, Michelina on site selling mermaid tails in case you need to get in the mood!  The Costume contests for adults and children returns. This year, the winners will win CASH and Prizes. “Whoo-hoo!” So, dress as a Pirate or a Mermaid.

Destiny Dance Academy has promised us a pirate dance presentation. All in all, it will be a great day to eat, drink, shop, dance, dress-up, and pretend. . .to just be a kid at heart. The date is April, 2nd - Mark your calendar!
